CBD Oil for Sleep: Benefits, Effects & Dosages

CBD Oil for Sleep

CBD and Sleep

CBD or Cannabidiol is just one of many cannabinoids in hemp. While there are 100+ known cannabinoids in the Cannabis Sativa plant, CBD and THC have been the most studied to-date. Lesser known cannabinoids include the likes of CBC, CBDa, CBDV, CBG and CBN.

Cannabinoids aren’t by-products of hemp where you can pluck, like a nut or a fruit, and eat directly from the plant. In order to safely ingest cannabinoids—like CBD—they must be extracted from hemp first. In this process, the harmful compounds like chlorophyll, lipids and waxes are removed; and the cannabinoids and other beneficial hemp compounds like terpenes and flavonoids become available to be infused into an oil, tincture or edible.

The varying degrees of extraction will produce different spectrums, from a Full Spectrum Hemp Extract Oil to a Broad Spectrum Hemp Extract Oil or a Pure CBD Oil

Due to CBD research and anecdotal evidence, many people take CBD Oil for a good sleep in lieu of OTC or prescribed sleep medication. Before we take a closer look at why CBD Oil is good for sleep, let’s dive into how CBD and cannabinoids work and affect the body.

CBD oil effects on the body

Our body has a framework, known as the endocannabinoid system (ECS), that is responsible for maintaining homeostasis to ensure our body’s functions perform with efficiency. The cannabinoids and CBD in Hemp Extract Oil interact with our endocannabinoid system to help aid in this balance.

Did you know that our endocannabinoid system produces its own cannabinoids naturally? Researchers believe that most people suffer from a cannabinoid deficiency which may lead to illness, pain and a decrease in mental and physical health. The CBD and Hemp Extract trigger our ECS to help regulate memory, learning, decision-making, emotional behavior, motor control, coordination, movement, appetite, body temperature and emotions.

The adhesion of the CBD and cannabinoids with specialized receptors in our body activates the cells and surrounding cells to aid in balancing sleep, mood, pain and inflammation for greater function.

The Effects of Sleep Issues

The National Sleep Foundation has reported that 50-70 million Americans are impacted by insomnia, sleep affliction and intermittent sleep irregularities. Sleep issues can result from getting little sleep, too much sleep or poor quality sleep. These issues can have a big impact, affecting our health, compromising our immune system and threatening our safety.  If left untreated, sleep problems have been linked to hypertension, heart disease, stroke, depression, diabetes and other chronic diseases.

“Hundreds of billions of dollars a year are spent on direct medical costs related to sleep disorders such as doctor visits, hospital services, prescriptions, and over-the-counter medications,” according to the report Sleep Disorders and Sleep Deprivation: An Unmet Public Health Problem published by The Institute of Medicine.

Sleep disorders impact everything from our productivity and focus to our moods and behaviors. However, unlike other medical conditions, there is an overwhelming number of undiagnosed and untreated people with sleep issues.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has reported that more than 33% of American adults aren’t sleeping enough and getting the recommended 7 hours or more (per day) to support optimal health and well-being.

Research Supports CBD Benefits for Sleep and Insomnia

Research suggests that CBD has a powerful influence on sleep quality with many reporting more than 7 hours of uninterrupted sleep and increased dream recall. CBD interacts with receptors in our endocannabinoid system. When CBD activates the Gaba and serotonin receptors, it supports the regulation of our circadian sleep-wake cycle. This is the body’s internal biological clock.

Additionally, CBD benefits our mental health, relative to anxiety, depression and stress. As such, CBD helps improve sleep by calming the mind to better manage overactive thinking and promote falling asleep quicker.

The 2019 study “Cannabidiol in Anxiety and Sleep” reported that 57 of 72 adults in the clinical sample exhibited a decrease in anxiety scores within the first month of using CBD. Within that same pool of adults, “sleep scores improved” in nearly 67% of the adults—48 patients. The study attributes this relief to CBD’s “calming effect on the central nervous system.”

Let’s look at a larger study performed by Project CBD on 1,521 people who took CBD for their sleep afflictions. According to the research, CBD reduced the average time to fall asleep from 62 minutes to 20 minutes and reduced the number of times waking up in the night from 4.3 times to 1.4 times.

Find the best CBD Oil dosage for sleep based on the severity of your sleep issue from light to severe. For a quick reference, the lower number in the recommended CBD Oil dosage for sleep is indicative of having a light symptom, whereas the higher number reflects experiencing a severe affliction.

Unfortunately, there is no universal dosage since our bodies are unique. We recommend starting with a smaller CBD dosage, and increasing if necessary. As always, consult with a physician first before starting a CBD or hemp extract regimen.
