Does CBD Help with Pain?

cbd oil for pain

CBD for Pain Management

Cannabidiol (CBD) and Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) are two of the most known compounds found naturally in cannabis plants. While CBD won’t cause consumers to feel the “high” that’s often associated with the effects of THC, CBD is gaining great popularity. And for good reason. Research is showing CBD benefits certain health conditions and may help support pain management. As a result, consumers who suffer from chronic or acute pain are turning to CBD products to better manage their pain. Depending on personal preference, users may purchase CBD in the form of oils, tinctures, edibles or topicals to support their health

Albeit, scientific research is still being performed on CBD and other cannabinoids, there have been many studies conducted to-date that are demonstrating the positive effect CBD has on certain health conditions. According to researchers, CBD can interact with our endocannabinoid system. The endocannabinoid system is a complex system of receptors found throughout the body; which can affect memory, mood, anxiety, modulation of pain and perception. The endocannabinoid system acts like other cell-signaling systems, where cells receive chemical signals from various stimuli to help the cells respond effectively and achieve homeostasis in the body. Let’s say you have an injury for instance. The cannabinoids like CBD may help to decrease the release of sensitizers from the injured tissue to stabilize the nerve cell and nearby cells. This response from the endocannabinoid system accounts for the anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving effects that can benefit and support pain management.

CBD and Arthritis Pain

CBD Oil for Arthritis

CBD for arthritis pain still requires more human studies to conclusively determine the effect CBD has on chronic arthritis pain. Most of the documented clinical research has been conducted on rats with arthritis who had been exposed to CBD. In these studies, the researchers applied a CBD gel on the rats for 4 consecutive days. During this period, the rats received a CBD dosage of 0.6, 3.1, 6.2 and 62.3 milligrams (mg) per day. The rats who received the lowest CBD doses of 0.6 and 3.1 milligrams didn’t exhibit signs of improvement, whereas the rats who received 6.2 and 62.3 milligrams per day showed a reduction in pain and joint swelling. This study shows promise that humans may use CBD to reduce their arthritis pain, without the negative side-effects of common NSAID drugs, such as aspirin or ibuprofen.

CBD for Migraines

Research was presented at the 3rd Congress of the European Academy of Neurology (EAN) in 2017 that showed the positive effect a combination of CBD and THC had on migraines. 48 people participated in the study and received two doses of a CBD & THC compound; the first dose was less than 100mg, and the second dose was 200mg. This study had similar results as the research performed on the rats with arthritis; human participants that received the low dose of 100mg did not report any reduction in migraine pain, whereas participants who ingested the 200mg dose reported having approximately 55 percent decrease in acute pain.

While we need more research performed on CBD and its effect on human pain management, these initial studies and results demonstrate great promise for CBD and the appeal to use in lieu of NSAID medication that my have potential long-term side effects. Research on CBD and other beneficial cannabinoids has been limited to-date due to federal regulations and cannabis legalization. However, we have seen great strides in the recent years with government policy and the passing of the Farm Bill Act, which legalized the cultivation of Registered United States Industrial Hemp. This will allow for more medical and research studies to be conducted on CBD and other cannabinoids; and we are looking forward to reviewing the results and clinical studies
